In 1777, two years into the American Revolutionary War, British and American forces met along the Brandywine River in what was one of the largest battles of the war. General Washington hoped to use he Brandywine River as a strong defensive position to stop British General Sir William Howe from capturing the city of Philadelphia. The battle, which lasted twelve hours, turned out to be one of Washington's sharpest defeats and paved the road of the British occupation of the American capital only two weeks later.
